How Employees Should Respond to Chemical Spills

When a chemical spill accident is handled correctly no one will get hurt. Before a company thinks of how to deal with chemical spills, it should think of how to prevent the accident from happening.  Teach the employees and lay down procedures that are appropriate for storing, handling, disposing of, transferring and using every type of chemical in the company.  Aside from Hazwop Training employees, you should provide them with protective gear and other necessities that are needed to handle chemical spills correctly.  The training programs on hazard are short-term programs that will not demoralize employees from participating. The following are guidelines employees should follow when a chemical spill occurs.

The  employees should learn about all the hazards that are involved with the chemicals that they deal with daily at the job site.  Give  then please all the details on how they should appropriately respond to chemical spill accident.  Put the response procedures in writing and find a strategic place to hang the written material for employees to keep referring to after the Osha 30 training so that they do not forget.   Employees learn better when you have the equipment to demonstrate to them how they should react to the chemical spillages.  The equipment that you make available for the employee should be of high quality to enable them to handle the chemical spill efficiently.

Employees must quickly communicate to their colleagues all over the premises immediately the chemical spill accident happens.  No one should come near the chemical still even if it appears small to ensure that everyone is safe as you determine the appropriate response procedure. If the spill does not spread rapidly, endanger people  or property unless they come into direct contact with it and does not endanger the environment you can clean it up.  It depends if you have enough people and equipment to clean up the quantity of chemical spill.  The liquid may spread to other places and cause more damage.  The liquid might be highly flammable.

You should recommend the correct procedure for cleaning up the simple spill.  You should contact the officer in charge of handling hazardous cases in your company because they have to be informed. Follow the right cleanup procedure for every type of chemical spill.  Use  absorbent materials and make a dike around the edges of the screen so that it does not spread. Dispose of the materials that you have used to clean the chemical appropriately.  Ensure that the area you have cleaned up is not left contaminated by the chemical.
